The first ever Highland Games Gathering Gauteng will take place at a lodge in the Cradle of Human Kind on 21 June. This follows after the seven year success of the Highland Games Gathering in the KwaZulu Natal, Midlands.

Bridget van Oerle, spokesperson for Buz Publicity, says the opening of the games will see over 200 competitors and pipers in the parade with Lorne Maclaine, chairperson of the Maclaine of Lochbuie, a Scottish clan, hosting the event. She says the Highland Games originally centred around athletics and competitions that have become emblematic of Scotland, along with kilts, whisky, haggis, bagpipes and Scottish dancing.

“The Highland Games Gathering Gauteng will include activities such as Tossing-the-Caber, the Tug-of-War, Shot Put, Carrying-the-Weight and the Kilted Mile, a race through the bushveld. Six civilian teams will compete in the games including a team from Durban and Bloemfontein,” says Van Oerle.

According to her, there will also be a celebrity team organised by John Owens, Mr South Africa, and a team from the Muldersdrift Police Station. She says entertainment on the day will include Scottish dance displays, a Border Collie demonstration, a tea garden and beer tent for adults, as well as a jungle gym and jumping castle for children.

“A number of Gauteng Pipe Bands will performing including the National Youth Pipe Band and Pretoria Highlanders. There will also be a demonstration by Burger Lamprechts, South African Highlander Champion, who is preparing for the World Highland Games Heavy Events Championships in August in Scotland,” says Van Oerle.
