Holiday goers are in for some feathered fun as the first Penguin Holiday Festival is held by SANCCOB Eastern Cape, a marine non-profit organisation conserving seabirds and other sea-life, from 20 to 29 December in the St Francis area. Louanne Mostert, spokesperson for the organisation, says some activities included in the 10 day festival are a black-and-white penguin party, a cheese-and-wine pairing and benefit auction, a penguin golf day as well as a children penguin holiday programme.

“The Penguin Holiday Festival will kick off with a public penguin release of African penguins rehabilitated at SANCCOB, coupled with the opportunity to adopt penguins being released. The festival will also include a show by Chris Chameleon and Wendy Oldfield, guided walks and private tours at the SANCCOB seabird rehabilitation centre,” she says.

According to Mostert, throughout the festival young and old holiday-makers will be reminded about the plight of the African penguin and threats seabirds and the ocean face, as well as what they can do to help. She says last year their centre received more than 150 visitors each day over the Christmas period and they had to offer their guided private tours over three slots daily.

“This year we’re offering holiday-makers even more opportunities to have a penguin experience. We invite everyone to take part in this festival because not only will young and old be entertained, but everyone will enjoy the opportunity to learn more about the charismatic African penguin and directly support the work we do conserving sea-life 365-days of the year,” says Mostert.
